Project developments:
- The Pigeon Farm was established in April 1998 with funding
of RMB 15,000. Of this, RMB 11,023 was contributed by the
local government and villagers.
- The Xixinbi Elementary School built the pigeon coops in
May 1998 and signed a contract with the Xiaoyi Science Institute
for technical support.. Twenty pairs of pigeons were thriving
and both students and teachers were gratified by the results
of their hard work.
- In October 1999, however, the entire school was stunned
to find that all of the pigeons had been stolen from their
coops and that the project would consequently have to end.
However, thanks to Ms. Li Yanping's donation of RMB 15,000,
the project was able to recommence. In addition, the Xiaoyi
local government donated RMB 8,000 and the villagers raised
RMB 1,000.
- The project netted income of RMB 20,646.57 and provided
tuition aid of RMB 18,684 to needy students. The project
also established a Teachers' Award of RMB 7,678, which were
partially sponsored by the local government.
- The local community has been very supportive of the Pigeon
Farm project. Volunteers contributed labor and funds to
help paint the classroom, install a heating system, purchase
desks and chairs, and to build pigeon coops. Total funding
reached RMB 130,000.
- The Pigeon Farm project has continued, however, pigeon
sales have slowed due to a recent price drop. In response,
the Community Council has suggested raising chickens instead
of pigeons, and this proposal is still under discussion.
- In November 2001, Mr. Fu Zhiqiang of Hong Kong donated
RMB 1,000 worth of goods to the children at the Xixinbi
Elementary School.
- The Phelex Foundation is continually challenged to find
new, profitable projects for local schools. This is necessary
because each time a school project has been successful,
local farmers have adopted its methods, which affects the
price of the schools' projects. On the other hand, it is
good to see the school Sustainable Tuition Aid project bring
new ideas to the farmers. After all, the goal for the Foundation
is to help both the disadvantaged children and their families.
- In Apr. 2002, the local government offered RMB 50, 000 loan without interests and villagers raised some fund. The chicken-raising program was officially launched.
- In Dec. 2003, the PF staff went to the school, comprehensively assessed first program and confirmed first program had achieved its goals.
